Have you ever looked at a photograph of yourself and thought of how many things have happened to you since that picture was taken? All of the dreams and desires you once had, you may now actually have. All of the unexpected situations and roadblocks you have encountered, you now have the strength and growth that came from them.

One picture shows the passage of time. Time truly changes everything and it changes us. We can look back on a photo from years and years ago and realize that we are not quite that same person anymore. We have grown and experienced so much since that photo was taken. We can look back at where we were and many of us never dreamed we would be where we are today. Hold onto photographs for they are capturing memories and a person that is ever-changing!

Going with the Flow

I have a little pocket calendar that I use to keep track of important dates, events, appointments, etc.  I look at it often to see what is going on for the week, I don’t typically rely on a calendar so much, but during these times with so many changes and things going on, I can’t keep my mind straight!  What has surprised me, especially in the last few months, is how many changes I have made to my calendar…this led me to write about an important topic.

Over the last few months ever since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, I have found myself erasing many plans out of my pocket calendar, not only that, I have found myself needing to add unexpected events to my calendar as well.  This happens of course in general, because life is ever-changing, however even more so in the last several months.  I think we all realize how much life changes, but having the “proof” right there in front of you is very eye-opening.

I have always been the kind of person that loves to have a routine and to have things planned out.  I know that some people are very go with the flow and they like adventure and spontaneity, and while I enjoy these things occasionally, if I don’t have a stable routine and plans laid out, I become very unsettled and anxious.

One thing that I have learned is that we can plan all we want, but life is going to unfold as it should regardless of the plans that we make.  Life can change for us in a matter of seconds, hours, days, it is always evolving and although we have control over many aspects of our lives, we don’t for others.  I suppose this constant change makes life interesting, keeps us on our toes, and helps us grow as a human being.

One thing for sure, one good and very helpful quality to have is being able to just take it easy and go with the flow.  When things don’t work out as planned, I still tend to get anxious and disappointed by it, but I am learning to be more patient and to remind myself that if something does, or does not happen, that it was just meant to be that way.  It’s not easy, but try just going with the flow and see how that can bring peace to your life.

Character

Can people truly change?  This is an age-old question with a not so easy answer.  We all have opinions on whether or not people can really change.  My answer is going to be sort of a mix and I will tell you why. 

We have heard people say “I’m a changed person,” “Be with someone because you love them, not because you want to change them,” or you may hear people say to one another “You’ll never change!”  What does this all mean?  Is it possible to change and if so, in what way?  For how long?  These questions are very thought-provoking for me and slightly complicated to write about, but one that interests me.  

There are different aspects of change, they could be personality, character, habits, temperament, etc.  Some of these are more easy to change than others.  I do believe that change is possible if someone really wants to, however the question remains how long will that change last and will an individual be highly prone to slipping back to old ways?

For the most part, I believe that personality and one’s temperament are pretty solid.  Throughout life we are constantly being exposed to many situations, different people, different ways of needing to adapt, these life circumstances can change who someone is, though temperament and personality I feel stay fairly the same throughout.  I believe people have many sides to them and situations, people, and life events bring out different aspects of our personality.  For example, I consider myself more of a homebody, but when I have a lot of plans going on, or I am doing a lot socially, I enjoy them and it brings out my outgoing and carefree side.  This doesn’t mean that I am changing, just a different side of me is being brought out.  Individuals can experience traumatic situations in life and these can cause someone to change their behavior, one may even notice a change in their personality.  Life events do change us, sometimes permanently, but I feel like our personality and character is innate and can always be brought forth.  Just how we all have things that make us happy, sad, or trigger us, those things are likely not to change, they are a part of who we are.

As far as habits go, I feel like if someone wants to change, that is when there is the best chance of an actual change.  When people change for others, or change due to pressure, this I feel is where the change may be temporary.  Even when one changes a habit for themselves, there is always that chance of going back to what is familiar and how we have done things most, or all of our lives.  I see this in my own self.  There are certain parts of me that I try to work on often, things like relationships, communication, managing anxiety, etc.  I work very hard as these are areas where I really want to make personal changes, yet it is a constant battle trying to change what I want and doing what is innate and comes to me naturally.  I know much of it is mind over matter, however true and constant change proves very difficult, at least for me!  I feel like there are sides of us that truly make up who we are and maybe are not meant to be changed.

So, for my answer to this age-old question, I would have to say yes, people can change and people do change, however I feel for the most part that change is either temporary, or that past ways have a tendency to resurface at some point in the individual’s life. This is quite a subject to ponder and there are so many sides to look at that there could be many opinions on this topic.  This is not to say that people can’t change permanently, they absolutely do, if someone truly wants to. Adapting to Change

For the most part, humans are pretty habitual by nature.  Most of us thrive with having a routine, we look forward to carrying out our daily rituals no matter how small.  We as human beings find comfort in the known, the routine, the predictable.  There are some individuals that thrive off of spontaneity and the unknown and some prefer a mix.  For me, I am very much a creature of habit, I enjoy having structure and a routine and most changes take me a while to adapt to.

In recent events, a sad and unfortunate Coronavirus (Clovid-19) pandemic has swept the globe flipping our lives upside down.  This virus doesn’t just have a massive effect on some people, or some countries, this pandemic has effected the entire globe.  The world has hardly ever seen such a nightmare, such a life-changing event.  In the blink of an eye, life has changed for all of us.  Our routines have been interrupted, our way of life has been modified, the hustle and bustle has been halted.  

Adapting to change is not easy, like I mentioned before, we thrive in the known and in our routines.  When life changes so suddenly as with the Coronavirus, we don’t have much time to plan, process, or adjust, it’s almost like you wake up and life is suddenly different.  Part of how we grow and become stronger is dealing with struggles, change, and the uncomfortable.  When change is unexpected and we are forced into a new norm, we have to learn to adapt as hard as that may be.  Thankfully, this pandemic will end, we will take control of this, and in the meantime we have to do the best that we can to maintain sanity and normalcy.

As with many things in life, this situation can be looked at as mind over matter.  It helps to remind ourselves that this is only temporary, we will have our routines back, we will be able to go out and enjoy life again.  Adapting to new ways of life, being around family 24/7, changes in routine, work, school, get-togethers, we will get that back.  No one wants to go through this, we must remember that and be there for each other.  As difficult as it is, try not to focus on what we temporarily lost, but to know that this has an end, and our love and support for our loved ones and humanity will get us through this.

Change has the ability to help us realize what we have, helps us appreciate and be grateful for the little things, not taking for granted coffee with a friend, having a job to go to, going to the store without wearing a mask and gloves.  Change can be very hard, but it is also beneficial. The ironic thing is that change eventually becomes a new norm.

These last few weeks I have really had to keep my mind in check.  I’ve had to remember that this is not permanent, we are all going through a trying time, we get used to and find comfort in the familiar, but it does not help us grow.  Not only is my routine changed, so are those of my family and we have to learn to really find a compromise in our new lifestyle because we are all having to change and modify what we are used to.

My thoughts and prayers go out to this entire world.  We have what it takes to get through this and one day we will all look back on this as just a memory.  I pray for peace, healing, health, and safety for each of you. God Bless.
